Floating and Sinking.

We are learning to describe if items float or sink.  

We noticed that there were several items that would sink to the bottom, these were rocks, tea spoon and a coin.  We were surprised to learn that a paperclip would also sink to the bottom.

Some items would float like feathers and pencils.

We carried out an experiment with a mandarin.  At first we put the mandarin in the water with its skin on.  We learnt that the mandarin would float.

Next, we took the skin off and put the mandarin back into the water.  We were amazed to find that the mandarin sank straight to the bottom.  We thought the skin worked like a life jacket to keep the mandarin afloat.
